Black Diamonds

Keeping the big question in mind ...

If the ghosts of coal miners and railroaders from the past visited today's world, what changes would they find the most disturbing, surprising, expected, or exciting at a modern day mine?

You have looked at four different aspects of what life was like for Wyoming miners in the early days. After completing your Quest, you are now knowledgeable about the impact of the railroad on coal mining, life as a miner, mining disasters, and ghost towns. Think about what it would have been like to work in a coal mine in the 1840’s to 1940’s.

Task #3: Now that you all are historians, use the results of your research to write and edit a short story or a simulated diary entry, or create a commemorative newspaper which illustrates the importance of coal mining in the early days of Wyoming.  Your teacher may tell you which one to do or your group may get to choose. In either case, your product should be interesting and creative, accurately reflecting historical events. You can be creative but base your work on the facts of the event.

Before you begin though, discuss your research results with each other so that you can decide together which product would best communicate the important ideas you learned.  The content of your story, diary, or newspaper is the most important focus for your group.  However, be sure to create a visually interesting product that demonstrates good production skills.  Work together with respect to complete your project and divide the work as equally as possible among all members of the group.
