AAA Math Trek

The Big Haul

Just ask Joe Foreman....

So, Joe, just what kind of math goes into making decisions in the mining industry anyway?

Well, kid, it's like this....

EXPLORING ISSUES

Discovering and recovering minerals in the earth is just the first step for a mining industry. Getting raw material to destinations to be processed has to happen in order for the minerals to be turned into usable products. Special trucks for hauling these goods make up an important part of the mining industry.

MINING FOR INFORMATION

Find out more about these trucks at:

Be sure to find out how much these trucks can hold. You'll need that information to complete this trek.

Thinking mathematically...

At an average speed of thirty-five (35) miles per hour, how much time is required for a haul (back and forth) to a preparation plant located three (3) miles away, exluding the dumping time?

PROCESSING INFORMATION

Combine what you know about time haul times and haul truck capacities to determine how much raw material could be moved to the preparation plant in one eight hour shift of work

FINDING AND CHECKING ANSWERS

Share the results of your mathematical thinking according to the directions of your teacher.

Moving on ...

How does an increase in the cost of a gallon of gas affect the mining industry, it’s employees and consumers?
