THE BIG QUESTION FOR THIS MINEQUEST:

Wyoming minerals are developed into conveniences and services that make our modern life more enjoyable. Are some of these goods and services more essential than others?

Once they leave the ground, minerals make the world go around. When you chug ice cold milk in a glass, you're using trona. When you turn on a light, you're using coal. Bentonite is used as a filler in cosmetics.

Wyoming is the nation's largest coal, trona, and bentonite producing state. At one time Wyoming was also the largest producer of uranium. Okay, you say. So what if Wyoming minerals play an important part of how we live each day and provide many of the comforts we are used to? What's the big deal? Many factors can change how available minerals are to provide the supply of goods and services we are used to receiving. What if you had to choose among the many conveniences you currently rely on. What could you live without? What would your community need the most?

In this Minequest you'll use information from the Internet to become a more informed citizen about Wyoming's Mining industry and how it affects goods and services you and your community rely on. You'll form your own opinions based on the information you gather about the priorities you and your community set for the use of our mineral resources.

The mining industry requires the work of many different people at each mining jobsite across the state. In addition, other people outside of the industry, including state senators and representatives, employees at state agencies, and consumers, all play a role in how the mining industry works. And, of course, all of these people have different ways of looking at things. Despite these differences, Wyoming mining industries and the communities they do business in must rely on teamwork to supply people with the goods and services we've all come to expect. You will also use the power of teamwork to get your work done in this Minequest investigation.
