Wyoming Energy puzzle |
The Big Question for this Minequest:
What role does Wyoming play in contributing to the nation’s energy needs?
While lifestyles of citizens across the United States may vary, we all share large appetites for power. No, not superhero strength or political clout, we’re talking about the power necessary to operate the conveniences that we rely on to survive in and enjoy our modern world. Whether powering up a computer or warming up a dirt bike, natural resources converted into usable energy are a must. Scattered across Wyoming is the complex geology that provided the setting for the formation of these natural resources in the form of coal, gas, oil, and uranium.
In this Minequest, you will work in teams to discover Wyoming’s complex world of natural resources and their use in creating the energy that powers the country.
The research will begin using resource Internet sites categorized into coal, oil, gas, or uranium. Teams will be required to divide and conquer the material following every link within the page to learn about the assigned energy resource. At your teacher’s direction, your research may continue as you search for two additional Wyoming Internet sites per team which address the big question, “What role does Wyoming play in meeting the nation’s energy needs?”
Getting Organized for Teamwork:
Task #1: Unless your teacher has assigned them for you, as a team select:
Task #2: Look ahead to the Processing page of this Minequest using the link at the bottom of this page to preview the requirements for the presentation your team will prepare to share the information your research reveals. Then, brainstorm ideas for your presentation. Discuss the options for sharing your information within the limits or requirements outlined by your teacher. (For example, your teacher might require that your presentation be in the form of a Powerpoint presentation. Or, you may be required to prepare a video or a brochure.) Your team’s presentation designer should take notes from this discussion to help prepare and plan your “show.”
Task #3: Agree on any formats that you want to use as a team to gather information from the websites you explore individually.
RESEARCH TIP: Regardless of how you agree to take and organize your notes, remember to require each other to record the sources of information you will need to include in your presentation to give proper credit and provide references. Check with your teacher for any particular rules you may be required to follow in citing your sources.
