The Big Question for this Minequest:
Should the Global Awareness Mining Company expand its coal mining operations to any of Wyoming’s nine coal fields?
Congratulations! Your class has been selected to conduct a feasibility study for the Global Awareness Mining Company which is considering expansion of its coal mining operations to Wyoming. A feasibility study helps a company decide what action to take by studying facts gathered from sound research.
The Global Awareness Mining Company has a big decision to make. Which of 10 possible Wyoming sites would make the best location for its expansion? The sites under consideration include: Jackson Hole, Big Horn, Powder River, Black Hills, Hans Fort, Wind River, Green River, Hanna, Rock Creek, or Goshen Hole. To make an informed decision, the company needs an analysis of sound research and your teacher has offered your services.
Because of the scope of the research, your class will work in groups of three as assigned by your teacher. Each of your groups will be assigned a particular role to play. Your team will acquire the expertise to play your role through your research. You will collect, critique, and summarize your research findings and recommend the best location for a coal mining expansion from the perspective of the role you have been assigned.
Then, your group research will be presented to classmates so that the class can agree on a recommendation for action for the GAWM. Your teacher, the company’s representative, will be available to field any questions regarding the expectations of the research. A class elected leader and recorder will organize all class meetings and facilitate the development of the master plan of action and time line.
You will conduct your research using the Internet. The Wyoming Mining Association has collected rich site resources that you will use as the primary source of information for this Minequest. Additional searches of other web resources may be conducted with the approval of your teacher. If allowed, remember to document your sources according to the directions or requirements of your teacher.
