AAA Day Trek Rock Cycle |
The Big Question for this Daytrek*:
*This webquest is based on information and content credited to the Geological Society of America.
How do rocks form? What are the different kinds of rocks? How do you know what kind of rock you are looking at?
EXPLORING ISSUES
Just about all of us have picked up a rock that we like and taken it home to keep. We put them in our rooms or in our gardens. Have you ever looked at that rock and wondered when and how it came to be a rock and why not all rocks look the same?
Rocks are always being formed, worn down by weather, glaciers and/or water and then formed again. This is know as the rock cycle and it takes thousands and millions of years for rocks to be formed or to be turned into soil. There are three types of rocks which are classified by how they were formed.
MINING FOR INFORMATION
Go to:
http://www.fi.edu/fellows/payton/rocks/create/index.html and then
http://cte.jhu.edu/techacademy/fellows/brannon/webquest/Rmform.htm and learn about how rocks are formed and about the characteristics of each type of rock.
Then go to: www.geosociety.org/educate/LessonPlans/RockCycleLab.pdf and follow the directions to complete the lab.
PROCESSING INFORMATION
Create a book with pictures or models that explains how rocks are formed so that the younger children in your school will learn about the different types of rocks and how to identify them. In your book, explain why knowing this information is interesting or important to learn.
