SAFETY RULES!
|
|
Remembering the question...
Because you are now experts on safety, Mr. Big, from the Carter Coal Mine in Sweetwater County, has come to your class and asked for your help.
Mr. Big tells you that mining is important to Wyoming, but keeping the miners safe and healthy is his most important work. He’s asking you to write a safety manual for him to share with his miners. This is very important work for you, and you need to learn some things about mining to do this well.
Your teacher will be your guide on this learning journey, and together you will travel the internet highway finding the information you need to write Mr. Big’s safety manual.
Many of your parents, friends, and relatives work at mines and run big pieces of construction equipment. Pay close attention so you can write some good safety rules to protect them at work.
With your teacher, go to
http://www.msha.gov/KIDS/MRHP.HTM
and learn what is mined in Wyoming. You can also go to
to find out which minerals are mined in Wyoming. What are the most important minerals mined in Wyoming?
Note to teacher: Please go to the site immediately below prior to using this resource to download and print this book on coal for primary children. Use it in a whole group activity. Downloading and printing will take about ten minutes. |
One of the minerals mined in Wyoming is coal. Since Mr. Big is from the coal mine, you need to learn more about coal and how it is mined. To learn more about the mineral coal go to
http://www.need.org/needpdf/infobook_activities/PriInfo/CoalP.pdf
Now take a tour of an underground coal mine of long ago, Old Ben #17. Then take a tour of the modern mine. Your teacher will know how to make that happen. Go to
http://www.msichicago.org/exhibit/coal_mine/index.html#
Keep thinking about the rules miners need to keep them safe while they work.
Next step ...
Follow your teacher to think it through.
