Webquest hints

Using Webquests

Wyoming mining industries emphasize safe work practice on the job and at home. Remember that …

• Webquests provide access to Internet sources in a controlled and efficient matter. By providing predetermined links to sites, students spend more time engaged with learning tasks and less time swimming the surf ineffectively. But web addresses change. Minequest links are monitored and updated, but your students may discover a broken link before we discover it. Teachers and students can use the Minequest Troubleshooting link at the bottom of each Minequest page to report broken links.

• Webquests clearly structure all activities around a "big question, " intended to engage students in working with significant ideas and content. While they are designed to stand alone, you may be able to strengthen the connection between the webquest and other class instruction by exploring the big question in class prior to beginning the webquest.

• Webquesting is about research and making sense of information. In the event that you choose to collect tasks involving writing, or you add your own writing products to a Minequest, you will be concerned about plagiarism. To avoid the "copy and paste" syndrome that makes no sense of anything but is a hazard of web research, take time to provide your students with strategies to avoid plagiarism. Model paraphrasing before expecting students to resist the temptation to simply copy from sources. Plagiarism is the result of giving up on making sense of research.
